The International Council for the Exploration of the sea (ICES) celebrates its centenary in 2002. ICES were founded in Copenhagen in 1902 and are still based in the city. Nineteen countries are members and six have observe status. As well as celebrating the centenary of the ICES, Post Denmark hopes that this stamp issue will focus attention on the marine environment. This is also the first joint issue by Denmark, the Faroe Islands and Greenland. Advisory capacity.
ICES co-ordinates marine research in the whole of the North Atlantic and advises member countries governments and international commissions about the exploitation of marine resources and about environmental protection. The council funds research disseminates information about the world under the surface of the sea and provides member countries governments with biological advice in the politically sensitive matter of setting fish quotas.
The 4dk stamp. The marine exploration ship DANA is the motif on this stamp.
The first marine exploration vessel DANA was launched in 1918 and served from 1920-21. She was a four-masted auxiliary schooner put at the disposal of ICES by the Danish shipping company EAC to replace Denmark’s first marine exploration vessel THOR procured in 1902, the same year ICES was founded.
The second DANA was a British steam trawler purchased by the Danish State in 1921. She sailed all over the world from 1921-1930 consolidating Denmark’s position as a leading nation in marine exploration.
The ship was lost after a collision in the North Sea in 1935-fortunately without loss of life.
Funds were earmarked to build a new ship in the spring of 1936 and the third DANA was launched in 1938.
