Built as a submarine by Electric Boat Division, General Dynamics Corporation, Groton, Conn. USA for the Navy of Peru.
02 July 1951 ordered.
12 May 1952 keel laid down.
27 October 1953 launched under the name TIBURON (Shark) one of the Lobo class of which four were built.
Displacement: 825 tons surface, 1.400 tons submerged. Dim. 74.1 x 6.7 x 4.2m. (draught).
Powered by two General Motor Corp.278 diesels, 2.400hp., twin screws, speed surface 16 knots, dived 10 knots on her electro engines.
Range 5000 mile by 10 knots. Armament: Four – 21 inch torpedo tubes forward and two aft. One 5 inch gun.
Crew 40.
20 February 1954 commissioned.
Her design is based on the American Sierra type submarine.
April 1957 her name changed to BAP ABTOA (S42), in memory of the naval battle of 07 February 1866 fought between the Spanish and Peruvian/Chilean naval squadrons. The Peruvians under Capt. Manuel Villar were victorious. Her motto was “Silence and assistance” in both times of peace and war.
During her time in the navy she completed over 5000 dives.
1965 Got a refit and was modernized by her builder in Groton.
26 August 1988 she assisted in the rescue of the crew of the submarine BAP PACOCHA that sank after a collision with the Japanese fishing vessel Kyoua Maru No 8 off Callao, eight men of a crew of 52 were lost. 1998 Decommissioned.
2004 She became a floating museum at the Peruvian Naval Museum, Callao under the name BAP ABTAO with pennant No. SS2. SG1642
