Vasco da Gama

Post by shipstamps » Wed Sep 03, 2008 3:34 pm

Vasco da Gama, pride of the Portuguese Navy when launched in 1875 from the old Blackwall Dockyard. She was completed two years later at a cost of £103,800. Her displacement was 2,972 tons, the warship having a length of about 233 ft., with a 40 ft. beam and a mean draft of 18 ft., while she was protected by an armoured belt 9 ins, in thickness. The central turret battery had 10-inch armour-plate, the deck being protected by 3-inch plate.
The Vasco da Gama was a twin-screw ship, of 3,605 i.h.p., her original speed being 13.2 knots. When completed she was armed with two 26 cm. 18-ton (Krupp) guns; one 15 cm. (Krupp); two 65 mm. quick-firers and two machine guns. Coal bunkerage was for 300 tons.
Reconstructed in 1903 at Leghorn, her new armament was then two 8-in., four 4.7-in., two 2.5 in., and some smaller weapons. Her speed was advanced to 15'/2 knots, while the ship's complement was 218. The St. Thomas and Prince 1.50 escudo stamp gives a delightful picture of the barquentine-rigged iron¬clad, with part of her sails set, steaming out to sea. SG453
