James Clark Ross commanding EREBUS and TERROR visited Kerguelen in 1840. He landed at Christmas Harbour on 5th May 1840 and stayed until 29th July.
Commander Francis Crozier, Captain of Terror, made magnetic observations while Ross carried out astronomical observations.

Built as a wooden hulled bomb vessel by Robert Davy, Topsham, Devon for the Royal Navy.
30 March 1812 ordered.
September 1812 keel laid down.
29 June 1813 launched as the HMS TERROR she was one of the Vesuvius class who were designed by Henry Peake.
Tonnage 333 ton (bm), dim. 102.4 x 27.3 x 12.11ft, length of keel 84.2ft, draught 8.10ft.
Armament: under deck 8 – 24 pdr. carronades and 2 – 6pdrs. Mortars 1 – 13 inch and 1 – 10 inch.
Crew 67.
31 July 1813 completed at Portsmouth.
07 October 1813 commissioned under command of Commander John Sheridan and sailed for North America in 1814.
Took part in the war of 1812 against the United States. Took part in the bombardment of Stonington, Connecticut on 9 – 12 August 1814 and Fort McHenry in the Battle of Baltimore on 13 – 14 September 1814. In January 1815 took part in the Battle of Fort Peter and the attack on St Mary’s, Georgia.
August or September 1815 paid off at Portsmouth and into ordinary.
1828 Recommissioned for service in the Mediterranean under command of David Hope.
18 February 1828 during a hurricane she ran aground on the lee shore near Lisbon, Portugal, eventually refloated and returned home for repairs.
After arrival and repaired, housed over fore and aft against in-watering and wood rot and laid up..
December 1835 housing removed and then used as tender for HMS HOWE.
January till June 1836 converted for £6,940 to Arctic discovery vessel at Chatham.
11 May 1836 commissioned under command of Captain George Back for a discovery voyage to Hudson Bay, returned home 03 September 1837.
Then fitted out for Captain James Clark Ross’s expedition to the South Pole for £6,765 at Chatham and coppered April to September 1839.

February till May 1845 fitted with auxiliary steam engine (ex railway locomotive) and hoisting screw propeller.
08 March 1845 recommissioned and still under command of Crozier sailed on 19 May 1845 from Greenhite to the Arctic waters and find the Northwest Passage together with HMS EREBUS.
22 April 1848 abandoned in the Arctic ice.
