The first Acadians (Settlers, mainly French) to reach St Pierre and Miquelon came from Cape Breton in 1758. After the Treaty of Paris in 1763, the Acadians were told that they had 18 months to relocate to French soil. In order to keep control, the French Government agreed to support only 300 Acadians and the new Governor (Dangeac) arrived in 1763 and formed a garrison..
By 1765 a large number of Acadians had arrived at St Pierre and Dangeac tried to get them to move to Guiana, but they refused to do so because they were afraid of the climate and disease.
But Dangeac had had enough and unauthorised settlers were ordered to leave. During 1767, 763 people left. The economy improved and by 1776 the population was 1894.
When France declared war on England in 1778, the Acadians were sent to France and their settlements destroyed but, after the peace treaty of 1783 they returned and rebuilt.
The whole thing happened again in 1793 and a British Force expelled them all once again.
When a treaty was made in 1814, many returned and by 1820, there were 800 Acadians on the Islands.
