New Zealander

Post by shipstamps » Thu Aug 21, 2008 3:29 pm

Two different spelling are given by the New Zealand Post Office for the brigantine on the 8c stamp, New Zealander on the stamp itself and New Zealandia in the press announcement. She was built in 1828 by Raine, Ramsay and Brown at Horeke and was of 150 tons burden. Built about the same time as the mission schooner Herald but to the West on the Hokianga harbour, this brigantine was described as one of the prettiest vessels of her class. She was granted Licence No. 2 by the Colonial Secretary's Office in Sydney to trade between Australia and New Zealand. She was wrecked near Sydney in 1836. SG1071
