Pericles

Post by shipstamps » Wed Aug 20, 2008 3:05 pm

On the 1 dr. stamp is the War of Independence vessel Pericles, from Hadji Anarghyrou, on the Island of Spetsai, also by P. Gravalos. At the opening of hostilities the Greek fleet consisted mainly of vessels from the islands of Hydra, Spetsai and Psara. Some of these had been built before 1814 in preparation for the uprising, which was carefully planned over a period of many years. By March 1821, the islands of Hydra, Spetsai and Psara were stocked with guns, arms, ammunition, incendiary and combustible materials. SG1169
