Barfleur HMS 1768

Post by shipstamps » Tue Aug 19, 2008 6:02 pm

The 3 cents stamp shows a painting by James Northcote in the National Maritime Museum of Samuel Viscount Hood in flag officer's full dress uniform of 1767-1783. His achievements in the West Indies were crowned by the part he played in the brilliant victory over the Compte de Grasse at the Battle of the Saints in 1782. In this he was second in command to Rodney and his ship was the Barfleur, second ship of the name in the Royal Navy. A 2nd Rate of 1,947 tons (builders' measurement), 98 guns, dimensions 178 ft. x 50'/2 ft. built at Chatham Dockyard, in 1768, she was broken up at Chatham in September 1819.
