Russian passenger liner built in Hamburg by Blohm & Voss, 1933 as the Caribia for Hamburg-Amerika Line. Gross tonnage 12,049; net 6,989; length 497'8"; beam 65'8"; depth 27'9"; draught 25'5"; Bought by the U.S.S.R., in 1946 and renamed. (Russia, 1966, 4k, SG3372).

The stamp shows us the harbour of Petropavlovsk, Kamchatka with some ships, the white ship is identified as the ILICH ex. CARIBIA, while the other ship most probably is one of the whale-oil refineries/fish factory ships of the type SOVIETSKAYA UKRAINA

Built as a passenger-cargo vessel under yard No 493 by Blohm.& Voss, Hamburg for Hamburg Amerika Line.
01 March 1932 launched as the CARIBIA. One sister the CORDILLERA.
Tonnage 12,049 grt, 6,389 net, 5,480 dwt, dim. 151.7 x 20.1 x 8.5m. (draught).
Powered by two 8-cyl. B7W diesel engines, 11,500 hp, twin shafts, speed 17 knots.
Accommodation for 234 first class, 103 tourist class and 110 third class, crew 198.
February 1933 completed, homeport Hamburg.

She was special built for the liner service between Hamburg and the West Indies and Middle America.
The construction of these two ships during the Great Depression helped largely Blohm&Voss through this difficult time. The German Government contributed financially for the building of this two ships.
04 February 1933 she sailed from Hamburg for her maiden voyage.
Early 1939 she brought 85 German and Austria Jews to Venezuela who got permission from the Venezuela President Eleazar Lopez Contreras to enter that country, first the CARIBA had made a call at British colony Trinidad but the Jewish passengers where not allowed to disembark there.

With the outbreak of the Second World War she ended her service to the West Indies.
1940 In use as a German navy accommodation ship at Flensburg-Mürwick.
May 1945 After the surrender of Germany the CARIBIA came in British hands, who in July 1945 allocated her to the United States.
June 1946 reallocated to the U.S.S.R. and renamed ILICH.
Then based in the Russian Far East with homeport Vladivostok.
Used in the service between Vladivostok and the Kamchatka peninsula.
1977 Out of service and hulked.
1984 Scrapped in the Soviet Union.
