Argentina commemorated her 1977 Navy Day with a 30 pesos stamp depicting the goleta Sarand, of the Buenos Aires Republic. On January 2, 1833. H.M. sloop Clio, (J. J. Onslow, commanding) was cruising off the Falkland Islands with orders to exercise the rights of sovereignty over the islands in the name of the King. He dropped anchor in Berkeley Sound (East Falkland), where he found the Sarandi and a settlement of gauchos already established on shore. In the face of indignant protests by the commander of the Buenos Aires forces, a landing party of marines and seamen was made at nine on the following morning, when the British flag was run up over the house of settler William Dickson. simultaneously the flag of the Buenos Aires Republic was struck and delivered by a naval officer to the captain of the Sarandi.
