Jean Bedel Bokassa

Post by shipstamps » Sat Jul 05, 2008 4:06 pm

What must surely be the most unusual presidential yacht is the Jean Bedel Bokassa, shown on the 30f. stamp of the Central African Republic. A stern view of her is depicted on a 40f. stamp. I am told that the full name of the ship is Le Marechal Jean Bedel Bokassa. The vessel was constructed in 1974 at Bangui at the wharf of the A.C.C.F., with the help of the Soc. Francaise de Constructions Navales at Chalons sur Seone, France. She has a length of 47m. and is propelled by two Payaud motors of 400 h.p. She belongs to the President of the Central African Republique after whom she is named but the stamps omit "Le Marechal". Every Saturday and Sunday tourists are enabled to make trips on the vessel towards Mongaumba, 80km. from Bangui.Cen Afr Rep SG404/405.
