The first ship to cross the Atlantic under continuous steam power was the Sirius. This was a wooden, two-masted side wheeler. Her foremast was set with three square sails and the mainmast was fore-and-aft rigged. The Sirius was built in 1837 by Robert Menzies and Son in Leith for the St George Steam Packet Co. and intended to operate between London and Cork. She was the first ship to have surface condensors, capable of feeding the boilers with fresh water. However, as their own ship, the British Queen, was not finished in time, the British and American Steam Navigation Company hired the Sirius to sail to New York in April 1838. On 4. April 1838 the Sirius left Cork harbour with 40 passengers on board bound for New York. After 18 days and 1 o hours the ship safely reached her destination despite strong winds. Heraverage speed was 6.7 knots. The steamer Great Western arrived four hours later. In July of the same year the Sirius crossed the Atlantic once more. After her return she was put into service between Glasgow and Cork. In January 1847 during one of these voyages, she was wrecked on the rocks in Ballycotton Bay.

The paddle steamer in the background of this two stamps is sometimes given as CLERMONT, but she is a different ship as depict on the stamp. The paddle steamer depict is the SIRIUS.
The passenger-cargo vessel is the ATHLONE CASTLE or her sister STERLING CASTLE.
