FRANCE was launched on 11th may 1960 by Madame de Gaulle. At the time the france was the largest liner in the world, about 4ft longer than the QUEEN ELIZABETH but of considerably less tonnage. The light alloys and the replacement of rivets by welding allowed a weight saving of about 20,000 tons.
The wings on the funnels are flu ducts for greater efficiency. The France had only 8 boilers whereas the NORMANDIE had 29. The ship also had a salt water distillation plant thus saving the space that would be taken up by 4,600 tons of fresh water. Dimensions length 1,035ft x 110ft beam. 160,000 hp. St Vincent SG 1224. France SG 1557. Senegal SG 344. Grenada Grenadines SG2210.
