CAIQUE

The “caique” is used in Mozambique Island area in the north for the transport of cargo and passengers.
Carvel-planked; sweeps up to a sharp bow, straight vertical stem; wineglass transom. Often has a castellated ornamentation on each quarter. Open or decked with a central hatch.
Steps two vertical masts; the foremast stepped well forward; the after mast about a third in from the stern, stayed aft. Lateen sails; after sail sheeted to an outrigger.
Crew 3-4, reported lengths 10 – 14 meter.

The “caique” used in the south near Inhambane are smaller and differ slightly. She are used for the transport of passengers and firewood. Carvel-planked; straight plumb or raked stem; wide wineglass transom. Generally flush-decked; some open. Outboard rudder; short tiller.
Lateen sails set to two vertical masts. Yard of foremast tacks to the stem; mainsail has a short luff and tacks just forward of the mast.
Crew 1 to 2. Reported length 6 – 8 meter; e.g. length 9-meter beam 1 meter.
