QUEENSBURY packet ship

Post by shipstamps » Wed Mar 25, 2009 4:55 pm

Also a ship with not the full name on the stamp, issued by Jamaica in 1974, she is given in Lloyds List as MARCHIONESS OF QUEENSBURY, but in a new book The Falmouth Packets 1689-1851 by Tony Pawlyn is she given as MARQUIS OF QUEENSBURY, but it is the same vessel. Not any mail ship under the name QUEENSBURY was ever used in the packet service to Jamaica.

The MARCHIONES OF QUEENSBURY was built in 1814 by ?, for Capt. Hennah (or Hannah), who was most of her voyages as a packet vessel her commander.
180 Ton, dim. ?

25 June 1814 she made her maiden voyage in the packet service from Falmouth, bound for Lisbon, sailed from Lisbon 17 July and arrived at Falmouth 26 July 1814.
She made thereafter-regular voyages to Halifax, New York, Leeward Isl., Jamaica, Mexico, Brazil, Spain and Mediterranean. When a captain name is given it is always Hannah, till the two last voyages in the packet service.
Her last voyages in the packet service were when she sailed on 24 Jan. 1929 from Falmouth under command of acting Lt. Swain, bound for Mexico, sailed from Tampico 31 March and Vera Cruz 11 April, Havana 23 April, arrived 15 June 1929 in Falmouth. A voyage of 11.805 miles.
Then she made an other voyage under command of act. Lt. Swain, sailed from Falmouth on 10 July 1929 for the Mediterranean, her last port of call was Corfu, arrived back in Falmouth on 14 Oct. 1929 after a voyage of 4.790 miles and 56 days.

After her packet service she was sold by Hannah to the Navy Board for police service at Gibraltar. (maybe later used as a hulk?)
