Built under yard No 83 as a supply and expedition ship by the yard of Fujinagata, Osaka for the South African Government (Dept. of Transport), Cape Town. South Africa.
29 September 1961 launched under the name R.S.A. (Republic South Africa).
Tonnage 1.573 gross, 734 net, 1.503 dwt., dim. 68.9 x 12.9m., length bpp. 62.0m.
Powered by one 6-cyl Sulzer diesel, 1.560 bhp., one screw speed 15½ knots.
Accommodation for 25 passengers.
Ice strengthened.
November 1961 delivered to owners.

Special built for the South African Antarctica Expedition of the season of 1962.
06 January 1962 she sailed from Cape Town with a crew of 35 men and 15 expedition members, also on board were 13 men to construct the buildings in the Antarctica. On board were 11 working huskies to be used as sledge dogs.
25 January arrived at the Norwegian basis camp in Polarsirkelbukta.

After this expedition she made regular voyages to the Antarctica, she carried also the mail for Marion Island, Gough Island, Tristan da Cunha and the Antarctic. Used as survey- and supply vessel for the South African camps in the Antarctic.

She was the first vessel which arrived in 1962, after the inhabitants returned to Tristan da Cunha end October 1962, she was then on a voyage from South Africa to the Gough Islands.

1977 She made her last voyage to the Antarctic; she was replaced by a new vessel the S.A. AGULHAS.

Partly scrapped at Cape Town by a local shipbreaker in 1995/96. A photo in Marine News of March 1996 shows her partly dismantled.

20 June 1996 her hull was scuttled in position 33 21S 17 07E.
