RAFTSMEN ON THE DUNAJEC RIVER

Post by aukepalmhof » Fri May 01, 2009 9:32 pm

A Polish stamp issued in 2004 depict rafts and men on the River Dunajec, a river what got his water from the Slovak territory and streams into the Baltic. It is named Biele (White) and Cierny (Black) Dunajec, Biele voda (white water) as well as Javorinka, which are all fed from the Pieninny Mountains.
At the town Nowy Targ the river turns to the east and some other creeks flows in her like the Osturniansky creek, Rieka creek and the Lipnik.
Farther downstream the river created a romantic ravine in the limestone reefs know as Prielom Dunajca (Dunajec Canyon). Lesnicky creek is also on of the Dunajec tributaries. Then the Dunajec turns to the northwest, flows through the Gorcov area to the Nowosacká dolina (Nowosacká Valley), where it meets the river Poprad, which is the biggest tributary of the Dunajec River.
40 Km more downstream the Dunajec finally joins the River Visia.
3.6 Km² of the Dunajec Canyon area is a protected National Natural Reserve. It is a very interesting area especially by the flora and a picturesque landscape.
361 Km² of the Dunajec drainage is situated at the Slovak Territory, of which a 20 km long stretch flows along the Slovak Polish border.
A favorite local tourist attraction is to raft down the river on a raft.
The presentation of the stamp, in a symbolic way reflects the close contacts between Poland and Slovakia. The rafting seen on the stamp on the river Dunajec that took place for centuries gives more than the river, which divided the two societies. It is here on the Dunajec River that most frequently the Polish and Slovakians people met.
Perhaps around this place the popular hero Janosik, of Polish and Slovakian legends lived.
