COONATTO sailing vessel 1863

Post by aukepalmhof » Mon Jul 20, 2009 9:43 pm

Built as a composite clipper in 1863 by Bilbe & Perry at Rotherhite on the Thames, for the Orient Line.
Launched under the name COONATTO, named after an Australian place.
Tonnage 663 ton, dim. 160.2 x 29 x 18.7ft.

She had very fine lines, but was a very wet vessel (a vessels which takes much water on board during bad weather at sea.)
She was used in the service between the Thames and Australia for her whole live as a cargo vessel.
She was mostly under command of Captain Begg, a hard driving captain.
Her best passage was when she sailed from the Thames and after a passage of 66 days passed the Semaphore Lightvessel (off Adelaide’s River Torrens.)
An other passage she made in 70 days to Australia, despite broaching to off St Paul’s Island in the Southern Ocean, where she lost two helmsmen and her steering wheel overboard.

On a voyage from Australia to London loaded with copper ingots and wool, she pilled up near Beachy Head in the English Channel on 21 Feb. 1876. Most of her cargo was salvaged but the COONATTO was lost.

Penrhyn Island 1981 6c sg179, 50c sg199, 1984 60c sg348.
