JAMES ARNOLD whaler 1852

Built by Jethro & Zachariah Hullman as a whaler for the account of James Arnold in New Bedford.
1852 Completed under the name JAMES ARNOLD.
Tonnage 345.8 gross, 328.5 net, dim. 115.2 x 27 x 17.6ft.
Three-masts, ship-rigged.
Managed by Henry Taber & Co. New Bedford.

03 May 1853, sailed on her maiden voyage from New Bedford under Capt. Thomas Sullivan for the whaling grounds of the Pacific, returned on 29 November 1856, with onboard 2.250 barrels sperm oil, 69 brls. whale oil and 500-pound bones.
During this voyage, she visited most probably Maloelap, Marshall Islands in the first year of her voyage. At that time the Marshall Islands were a stopping port for the American whale ships for trading and replenishment.


18 August 1857 sailed out again under command of Sullivan for the whaling grounds of the Pacific, returned on 04 Nov. 1861 with onboard 2.503 brls. sperm oil, during the voyages, sends home already 98 brls. sperm oil.

After arrival sold or the management with Taber was terminated, her next voyage she sailed on 12 June 1862 from New Bedford under command of Capt. David H Barlett, and he managed the vessel also. She sailed for the whaling grounds of the Atlantic and returned on 19 Dec. 1863, it was not a successful voyage; she arrived with only 380 brls. sperm oil, during the voyage sends home 95 brls. sperm oil.

28 May 1864 sailed out, under Capt. Jacob L Cleaveland, management was renewed with Henry Taber & Co. , for the Atlantic whaling grounds.
Returned 02 Nov. 1865 with onboard 491 brls. sperm oil, 10 brls. whale oil and 300 pound bones. During the voyage send home 215 brls. sperm oil.

Her fifth voyage was again under command of Capt. T. Sullivan for the Pacific whaling grounds, sailed out on 29 May 1866 and returned 01 August 1869, with onboard 1.350 brls. sperm oil, send home during the voyage 1.629 brls. sperm oil.

12 October 1869, sailed out from New Bedford for the whaling grounds of the Pacific, under command of Capt. William P. Briggs. Returned on 04 December 1873 with onboard 600 brls. sperm oil and 860 brls. whale oil. During the voyage send home, 370 brls. sperm oil, 712 whale oil, and 3.462-pound bone.

03 June 1874, sailed from New Bedford under command of Capt. Thomas H. Wilson for the whaling grounds of the Pacific, according to her latest report of that voyage she had on board 1.150 brls. sperm oil, but she never arrived back in her homeport New Bedford.

In total, she made 12 whaling voyages for her American owner, before she was sold in 1895 to Toro & Ramon at Talcahuano, Chile. Again used for whaling.
1897/98 Her owner is given as Toro & Martinez at Talcahuano.
1912 Her owner given as Vda de G Toro.
Till 1922 used as a whaler from Talcahuano.
1925 Used as a decked hulk.
1927/28 The last time Lloyds Register mentioned her name.
