Post by aukepalmhof » Fri Sep 25, 2009 9:17 pm

Built under yard No. 111 as a ro-ro ferry at the Detlev Hegemann Rolandwerft at Bremen-Hemelingen for the Polynesia Shipping Corp. at Nuku’alofa, Tonga.
24 June 1981 launched under the name OLOVAHA (2)
Tonnage 707 gross, 250 net, dim. 48.9 x 11.0 x 2.4m. (draught)
Powered by two 12 cyl. 4SA Cummins diesels, 700 bhp., twin screws, speed 13 knots.
22 August 1981 delivered to owners. IMO No. 8018962.

She was fitted out with a bow-ramp, the Tonga group of 169 islands of which 36 are inhabited, needs a small vessel to carry out the services between the main islands, some of this islands do not have a jetty or wharf to berth on, and the shallow draft OLOVAHA can be beached, then lower her bow-ramp and by means of an 8 meter long ramp, can discharge the cargo and passengers.

When cyclone Ami hits the Tonga group in January 2003, she was at anchor in Nuku’alofa harbour, she dragged her anchor, then came in collision with the LOTOHANGANA a 300 tons cargo vessels, which broke its moorings in the heavy seas and drifted onto the reef, where she capsized.
The OLOVAHA stranded on Popua Beach, next to the LOTOHANGANA, she got holed on the rocks, her engine room flooded.
