INSULANO

By the Azores a set of stamps was issued in 1992 which depict four ships used in the service between the Azores and Portugal, all four sailed in the service of the Insulano de Navegaçao (E.I.N.) which was founded in 1871.

Two steamships were bought the ATLANTICO and the INSULANO, the later one is depict on the stamp of 38e.
Built as a cargo vessel under yard No 117 by Earle at Hull for Empreza Luzitana, Lisbon, Portugal.
29 August 1868 launched under the name INSULANO.
Tonnage 877 gross, dim. 64.4 x 8.5m.
Engine and speed?
October 1868 completed.

Most probably used in the service between Hull and Lisbon, as she was managed by Bailey & Leetham, Hull.
1872 Sold to Empresa Insulana de Navegaçao, Lisbon, thereafter used in the service between Lisbon-Madeira and Azores. Not renamed.
20 January 1875 she sank after a collision with the steamer CITY OF MECCA near the entrance of the River Tagus.
