KÖNIGIN MARIA was the first passenger steamer on the Upper Elbe River.
When in 1836 the Elbdampfschifffahrts-Gesellschaft was founded the KÖNIGIN MARIA was built after plans made by Johann Andreas Schubert in Dresden.

With the help of the plumber Sigismund, locksmith Bose a few blacksmiths and helpers the sheet iron hulled ship was built on the old Vogelwiesengelände area on the Elbe banks, Dresden.
The hull was made of sheet-iron on iron frames.
Dimensions 36.10 x 3.92 x 0.74m (draught), beam over paddle-wheels 7.84m.
Low pressure steam engine 41.6 hp.
Passengers between 300 to 500 persons.

06 June 1837 trials were held between Übigau and Briesnitz on the Elbe River, followed on 30 July by her maiden voyage between Packhof and Meissen and retour, it took her 1½ hour to Meissen.
25 August 1837 began the scheduled traffic in the Sächsische Schweiz (Saxony) to Rathen service.

1841 A new engine was installed manufactured by John Penn
1846 She was scrapped; her engine was removed and placed in a new ship with the same name.
