HANS EGEDE

Built as an iron hulled passenger/cargo vessel under yard No. 240 by Burmeister & Wain, Copenhagen for the Kongelige Gronlandske Handel, Copenhagen, Denmark.
14 December 1904 launched under the name HANS EGEDE.
Tonnage 811 gross. Dim. 56.08 x 10.57 x 5.42m., length bpp. 52.3m.
One 8-cyl triple expansion steam engine, manufactured by B&W, 92nhp., speed 8.5 knots.
Schooner rigged.
April 1905 delivered to owners. Homeport Copenhagen.

Used for the service between Denmark and Greenland, she made the voyage in 10 to 12 days.
She was the first iron hulled vessel to reach Greenland.
Altogether she made 138 voyages to Greenland before World War II broke out.
Then used between Greenland and the USA, she made two voyages to Philadelphia and two to New York.
1939 Tonnage given as 900 gross, 723 net, 500dwt.

27 February 1942 she sailed from Greenland under command of Capt. N.O.Petersen and a crew of 22 men, bound for the USA.
06 March 1942 she was sighted off New Foundland by the U-587 under command of Capt. Borcherdt, he fired some torpedoes which hit the vessel, after which she sank.
The crew of 23 men were all lost.
