ICTINEO submarine 1865

Post by aukepalmhof » Thu Nov 12, 2009 8:08 pm

Mr. Peter Crichton has confirmed the depicted submarine is the ICTINEO (II), and not the one build in 1859.

Built in 1864 as an improved version of the ICTINEO (I). she was named after the ancient Greek word for a combination of fish and boat.
Designed by Joan Monjo and built under supervision of the Spanish inventor Narcis Monturiol.
Displacement 46 tonnes, dim. 14 x 2 x 3m.
Built of olive wood with oak reinforcements, sheated with a 2mm thick layer of copper.
One entrance hatch with three glazed portholes.
She was first hand propelled. Designed to carry a crew of 16.
20 May 1865 she made her trials in Barcelona harbour, but her speed was not more as one mile under handpower.

Then it was decided to replace manpower by a steam engine, a detachable steam engine was constructed and the parts were transported via the small hatchway inside the hull were after the parts were assembled.
The steam engine composed of a boiler heated by coke, and two engines of 6 hp. for surface and 2 hp. for submerged power.
October 1867 the engines were installed. During trials her speed was not much improved and it did look that it was a failure.
After they had spent around 400.000 pesetas (equivalent to 3 million Euros today) on the ICTINEO (II) they were running out of money and in December 1867 all the employees were sacked.

The ICTINEO I and II were auctioned off to pay the debts, both were dismantled before the summer of 1868.

The ICTINEO (II) was the first submarine fitted out with an engine.

A replica of the ICTINEO II was built in 1992 and placed by the harbour in Barcelona.
