Post by aukepalmhof » Sun Jan 03, 2010 7:52 pm

This galleon is taken from a painting by Rafael. Monleón Torres (1843-1900) in the Naval Museum , Madrid.
In the painting there are on the left a Dutch galleon, and a small lateen rigged vessel.
The galleon in the distance on the above stamp is not explained.

Two Spanish galleons of which one is doubtful if she stranded on Anegada reef are given in the web-site given below. So most probably the galleon wrecked in 1731 is depict on this stamp.
The unnamed Spanish Galleon wrecked in 1731 on Anegada Reef, British Virgin Islands was loaded with a very valuable cargo of mercury and quicksilver and destined for the silver and gold mines of Mexico.
