PROTET
Commandant Riviere Class Frigate F748. Built at Lorient Naval Cockyard. Laid down September 1961, Launched December 1962, Commissioned 1st May 1964, Tonnage: 1750 standard displacement, 2250 full load. Dimensions Length 340.3 feet, beam 38.4 feet draught 15.7 feet. Armed with four Exocet missiles. Speed 25 knots. Complement of 167.

Built as a frigate by the Arsenal Lorient, Lorient for the Marine National of France.
September 1961 keel laid down.
07 December 1962 launched as PROTET (F 748) named after Admiral Protet (1802-1862) one of the Commandant Riviere class of which nine were built all at Lorient.
Displacement 1,960 ton standard, 2,170 ton full load. Dim. 102.70 x 11.80 x 4.35m. (draught).
Powered by four SEMT-Pielstick PF 12 diesel engines, 16,000 hp., twin shafts speed 26 knots.
Range by full speed 2,300 mile, by 16.5 knots 7,500 mile.
Armament3 – 10.3 inch, 2 – 3.0 AA inch. 1 – 305mm mortar, 2 – 12.7mm MG, 6 – 550mm torpedo tubes.
Crew 214.
01 May 1964 commissioned.

Built as an escort frigate and for peace time missions, after completing she joined the Pacific Division (Divaoaci) stationed in Papeete.
From 1971 till 1975 stationed in the Indian Ocean
1975 Sailed for France where she underwent a refit in Lorient till 1976.
Four MM 38 Exocet missiles were installed, and one gun of 10.3 inch was removed.
Then again stationed in the Indian Ocean until 1978.
From 1978 again stationed in the Pacific till 1981.
Underwent again a refit which saw the introduction of electronic warfare systems, she was again stationed in the Indian Ocean area.
During the Iran-Iraq War (1987-1989) she escorted convoys of merchant ships in that area.
1991 Took part in the Gulf War

29June 1992 decommissioned.
24 May 2001 sank off Toulon as a target by a combined force during exercise Trident.
