IMPERATRITSA MARIA ship-of-the-line 1853

Built as a ship-of-the-line at Nikoleav, Black Sea for the Russian Imperial Navy Black Sea Fleet.
23 April 1849 keel laid down.
09 May 1853 launched as the IMPERATRITSA MARIA (Empress Maria) or also given as IMPERATRITSA MARIIA. She was one of the KHRABRYI class of two ships.
Displacement 4,160 ton, tonnage 2,770 ton (bm). Dim. 200 x 56.8 x 24ft.
Armament: lower deck 8 – 86 pdr shell guns, 24 – 36 pdr long guns, upper deck 34 – 36 pdr. short guns. Forecastle and quarter deck 20 – 24 pdr. gunnades, 2 - 24pdr. carronades, 2 – 12 pdr. carronades and 2 – 8 pdr. carronades.
1853 Completed.

1853 Sailed from the yard in Nikolaev to Sevastopol. She was the last Russian sailing line of battle ship completed.
October 1853 transported 939 troops from Sevastopol to Sukhum-kale.
18 November 1853 as flagship of Vice Admiral Nakhimov she took part in the battle at Sinop; during this battle she fired 2128 rounds. Took 60 hits and 16 men on board were killed and 39 wounded.
After repairs was she stationed in Sevastopol roads in 1854.
28 August 1855 scuttled at Sevastopol when Russian troops abandoned the city.

Russia 1987 30r sg5828, scott5623e 1952 40k sg 1774, scott 1639, she is the flagship and the first vessel in the column on the 40k stamp.
