Deptford HMS 1935

Post by john sefton » Sun Aug 29, 2010 2:58 pm

After a couple of months in the Mediterranean she was recalled to the United Kingdom to join the Western Approaches Command. There followed a period of intensive activity escorting convoys around the north of Scotland. She also, on occasions, formed part of the escort for convoys sailing between the UK and Gibraltar. After one of these trips she went into refit.
While being refined her unit, the 2nd Escort vessel Division, was
reclassified as the 2nd Sloop Division. Back on escort duties in the
Atlantic HMS Exmoor carried out unsuccessful attacks on two
submarines on consecutive days. In July 1940 she evaded a torpedo
attack from a submarine and counter-attacked unsuccessfully. On the 9th February 1941 the convoy (HG53) she was escorting was attacked by U.37 who sunk two merchant ships and then signalled the convoy's position. As a result the convoy was attacked by aircraft and 5 ships were lost.
Following a refit in March, HMS Deptford was back on escort duty in the Atlantic being given very hard time particularly when escorting convoy OG74
In November 1941 she was involved in carrying out a dummy diversion attack in aid of the army in N. Africa by simulating a landing in the Western Mediterranean. The following month while escorting convoy HG76 she carried out her first successful attack on a U boat.
HMS Deptford was subsequently involved with Operation Torch and the assault on Oran. The following year she ran aground at Algiers and had to return to the United Kingdom for repairs.
She then rejoined the Mediterranean fleet until the end of 1944 when she joined the Portsmouth Command. She left the Portsmouth Command in June 1945 to join the Reserve fleet at Milford Haven:
In 1948 she was sent to the scrap yard.
