The design of this stamp is most probably made after a model in the Musée la Marine in Paris, which most probably depict the French warship PROTÉE (1748-1771) 74 guns.
There was a Le PROTECTEUR  built in 1761 in Toulon as a ship-of-the-line and made after plans by Noel Pomet.
1757 Laid down.
21 May 1760 launched as the Le PROTECTEUR.
Armament: lower deck 26 - 24pdr., upper deck  28 -12pdrs,  10 – 8pdr guns on fore castle and galleries.
Crew 410.
She took part under command of M de Grasse-Limermont in the American revolutionary war, and was a unit in the French fleet in the Battle of Grenada which took place on  06 July 1779.
Decommissioned 1789.
