CHITATARRO or also called XI-TATARU a fishing raft used in the area off Maputo, Mozambique.
In 1970 there were still some around. The building of these rafts has not changed much for centuries.
Composed of the stems of palm leaves, the bundles tied with leaves, fibber, copper wire, or later with nylon thread. A layer forms the flat bottom, and the vertical sides are formed by 3 or 4 bamboo poles.
Forward ends may be cut at an angle.
A seat aft support the sides and closed off the stern.
A type of thwart forward supports a light mast, mostly she carry a lateen sail.
The raft is steered by a paddle.
Length around 4 meter
