TERRE-NEUVIER

Post by aukepalmhof » Tue Nov 20, 2012 8:13 pm

Not a ships name given by this stamp, which shows us a two mast topsail schooner, but I am sure the vessel depict was a Terre-neuvier a French fishing vessel, fishing on the Grand Banks off Newfoundland.

Most of these French fishing vessels came from Bretagne; the first which sailed from Le Havre was the L’CATHERINE in 1544 even after World War II some French sailing vessels were still fishing on cod at the Grand Banks.
The vessels which sailed from French in the 20th century were mostly three masted and carried 10 to 14 nested dories on board.
Often she had a clipper bow, as seen on the stamp.
Crew at least 50 men.
Dim. 42.0 -54 metres, beam around 8.7 metre with a depth of around 6 metre.
2012 Not one of this fishing vessels exist today, even I can not find a replica.

St Pierre et Miquelon 1942 5/20f sg322/35 and 1945 50c/15f sg346/53.
