Proa Beduang (Indonesia central)

Double-outrigger craft that was mainly a fishing boat, but larger sizes served as traders. Found along the northeast coast of Java and on Madura. Built up from a dugout base with 1-2 planks and sometimes a washstrake. Hull narrow in propor¬tion to depth. Sharp ends; bottom curved up smoothly at bow, which raked inward sharply at the top. Stern higher; rounded up to a tall projection or was cut to a sharp, straight raking end. Two booms crossed the hull to long bamboo floats set well away from the hull; booms anchored by double lashings that passed under a crosspiece wedged beneath protuberances left in the hull. Forward boom attached directly to each float. After boom secured by a vertical stanchion and an angle brace; boom stayed from the mast.
This vessel is different from proa Mayyang because it has two masts. Stepped a very short, fixed foremast in the bow.Removable mainmast stepped close to the stern.
. As well as on the proa Mayyang, on masts between the two yards types Ryu fastened rectangular lugsails , that reduced in height to one side. Both yards converged at the bow and were associated together. Therefore this proa sails of rectangular transformed triangle.
Rudder secured against a transverse piece on the windward quarter.Small boat operate with the help of the steering oar.
Small size ca. 5m long, largest to ca. 16m; e.g., length ca – 11,0m, beam 0.6-0,8m, depth 1,2m.
