Freelove is a collier, transporting coal between Newcastle and London. Captain James Cook’s first taste of life at sea was aboard the Freelove. He stayed with her for two years (1747-1748). Captain Cook made his studies on this ship.

She was belongs to John and Henry Walker, Quaker shipowner in Whitby. Built in Great Yarmouth Shipyard, Norfolk, England in 1746. 341 tons, 106' x 27', three masted and square rigged ship. Complement of 19. Master, mate, carpenter, cook, five seaman, and ten servants or apprentices.

His first voyage from February 26 to April 22, 1747. Other two Freelove voyages; September 29 to December 14, 1947 and February 26 to June 7, 1748. Other periods have been hard to trace.

During winter Freelove stayed in Whitby for repairs so this allowed James Cook some time for further studies like navigation, algebra, geometry, trigonometry, and astronomy, all skills he would need one day to command his own ship.
