Cape Horner

Post by Arturo » Thu Jan 15, 2015 9:36 pm

Cape Horner is a generic term for a vessel which sailed past Cape Horn on the southern tip of South America, one of the world’s most formidable obstacles to navigation.

Most of these vessels were square rigged vessels.

For more info about square rigged vessels see topics: “Sagres (I) 1896”, “Amerigo Vespucci”,” Wm D Lawrance”, “Grace Harver”.

In 1905, about 400 square rigged ships made the passage around Cape Horn and no fewer than 50 ships sank there.

The last full rigged ship to round the Horn was the Joseph Conrad.

For more info about Joseph Conrad see topic; “Georg Stage (Cadet Ship)”

You can also get some more info about cape horners, see topics; “Polly Woodside”, “Antoinette”, “Great Republic”.
