SAINT LOUIS 1642

Post by aukepalmhof » Mon Jul 04, 2016 8:45 pm

This set of stamps issued by Reunion in 1942 for the 300th anniversary of the island by France and shows us when the first governor of Madagascar Jacques Pronis officially claimed the island in 1642 for the King of France, which named it Ile Bourbon, later renamed in Reunion.

March 1642 Jacques Pronis sailed from Dieppe on board of the SAINT LOUIS under command of Captain Coquet. On board were also a dozen settlers bound for Madagascar. The SAINT LOUIS was a ship of the French Compagnie des Indes Orientales.
September 1642 she arrived at Madagascar.
Pronis sailed then to Reunion on board the SAINT LOUIS with a dozen mutineers from Madagascar and raised the French flag and claimed the island for the King of France before returning to Madagascar. leaving the mutineers on the island.

Could not find any details on the ship Le SAINT LOUIS only that she was wrecked on Madagascar around 1643 and the crew settled there.
