HERMIONE frigate 1779

Built as a wooden frigate at the arsenal of Rochefort after the design of Henri Chevillard for the Royal Navy of France.
28 April 1779 launched as the HERMIONE, three sisters the La COURAGEUSE, La CONCORDE and La FÉE.
Tonnage 1,166 tons, dim. 44.20 x 11.24 x 5.78m. (draught).
Armament 26 – 12 pdrs, guns.
Crew 255.
1779 Completed, she was built in eleven months.

Between May and December she underwent successful sea trials in the Gulf of Cascony, under command of Vassor de la Touche.
11 March 1780 General La Fayette embarked at Rochefort the HERMIONE for his voyage to America, arriving 28 April in Boston, Mass. carrying the then-secret news that he had secured French reinforcements of 5,500 men and 5 frigates for Washington.
02 June 1780 she left the States and during the voyage, she met the British frigate HMS IRIS, the battle was fierce but indecisive, but she suffered extensive damage.

May 1781 the HERMIONE received the U.S. Congress on board.
Under command of Louis-René Levassor de Latouche Tréville she fought several times in company of ASTRÉE commanded by Jean-François de Galaup, comte de La Pérouse, especially at the naval battle of Louisbourg on 21 July 1781

February 1782 after the end of the American Revolutionary War she arrived in France. She then formed part of a squadron sent to India to help Pierre André de Suffren against the British. However, peace was declared and the ship returned to Rochefort in April 1784.
1792 Re-commissioned against the British, on 20 September 1793 at 06.30 p.m. with a moderate wind from the NNE she ran aground in the entrance of the River Loire due to a pilot mistake, with the falling tide the hull got holed and water was flowing in the holds, she got a heavy list to starboard and at 21 September at 10.00 a.m. she is abandoned by the crew.
