Encyclopaedia https://teara.govt.nz/en/waka-canoes/page-4#:~:text gives.
The waka tētē (or waka pakoko) was generally shorter and plainer than the large waka taua. Some hulls were constructed from single logs, and some had joints similar to those of waka taua. The basic components were also the same: hull, gunwales, thwarts, bow piece, and sternpost. The gunwales were generally not decorated, and the bow piece and sternpost were less intricately carved. The bow piece typically took the form of a stylized face with a protruding tongue, described as tētē, or pakoko, by which the vessel is classified.
Uses
These canoes were used in many ways and were often not subject to as many ritual restrictions as waka taua. They carried goods, produce, and people along many of the coastal and inland waterways. Early settler records describe the Auckland waterfront of the mid-1800s as crowded with this waka, laden with wares for trade.
Aak to Zumbra a dictionary of the World’s Watercraft gives.
Maori canoe “waka tete” was used for fishing and coastal travel. Dugout hull, raised by a wash-strake, ca. 23cm high lashed on, battened both inside and out; stopped just short of the ends where it was shallower. Hull a single piece or lengthened at each end, bottom a wide “U” in cross-section, sloped up gently at bow and stern. A low figurehead was slotted onto the bow, merging with the wash strake; frequently had a grotesque head the tongue hanging out; a small breakwater terminated the bow piece. Tall vertical stern piece usually unornamented, although it might have, a small figure at the base. Open; circa 8 thwarts; floor like grating on the bottom. Mainly paddled, but might set a single triangular, boomed, mat sail, apex down. Steered with a paddle. Crew of 10.
Reported lengths 11-15m. e.g.; length 12.8 x, beam 1.3m depth 0.43m.
