The French Polynesia Post issued a minisheet commemorating the 200th anniversary of the round-the-world voyage of the Corvette "La Coquille" under the command of Captain LOUIS DUPERREY and First Officer Jules DUMONT D'URVILLE in 1822-25.
VOYAGE UNDER THE COMMAND OF LOUIS ISIDORE DUPERREY.
Louis Isidore Duperrey (October 28, 1786, Paris - August 25, 1865) - French traveler, navigator, oceanographer, naval officer, scientist. Member and President of the French Academy of Sciences, member of the American Academy of Arts and Sciences.
In 1802, at the age of 16, he entered the French Navy. In 1817-1820, as a marine hydrologist, he took part in a round-the-world voyage under the command of Louis de Freycinet on the ship “Urania”. The main purpose of the expedition was the ethnographic study of the indigenous peoples of the little-explored lands. Within three years he visited Australia, New Guinea, the Admiralty Islands, the Caroline Islands, the island of Guam, where he landed in March 1819.
After returning from the expedition, Duperrey was appointed captain of the corvette "La Coquille" and sent to a new round-the-world expedition, which took place from August 11, 1822 to April 21, 1825, in which Jules Dumont D’Urville took part as first mate. The sailors visited Tenerife, Brazil, discovered the islands and atolls of Clermont-Tonnerre, Duperrey, Dumont D’Urville, explored the coast of Australia, New Guinea, New Zealand, a number of archipelagos and islands of Oceania, including Tahiti.

FIRST VOYAGE UNDER THE COMMAND OF DUMONT D’URVILLE.
Jules Sébastien César Dumont d'Urville (23 May 1790 – 8 May 1842) was a French explorer and naval officer who explored the south and western Pacific, Australia, New Zealand, and Antarctica. As a botanist and cartographer, he gave his name to several seaweeds, plants and shrubs, and places such as d'Urville Island in New Zealand.
Floating on Coquille, Dumont tried to reconcile his responsibilities as second in command with his need to carry out scientific work. He was in charge of carrying out research in the fields of botany and entomology. La Coquille brought back to France specimens of more than 3,000 species of plants, 400 of which were previously unknown, enriching moreover the Muséum national d'histoire naturelle in Paris .
Coquille was renamed Astrolabe in honour of one of the ships of La Pérouse. She sailed from Toulon on 22 April 1826, towards the Pacific Ocean, for a circumnavigation of the world that was destined to last nearly three years.
Astrolabe explored parts of New Zealand. In January 1827, the French explorer Dumont d'Urville arrived in Tasman Bay / Te Tai-o-Aorere in the north of the South Island. A number of landmarks around Tasman Bay were named by d'Urville and his crew including d'Urville Island, French Pass and Torrent Bay. Dumont then sailed along the east coast of the North Island. On 12 March 1827 Astrolabe entered the Bay of Islands.
On 19 December 1827 Astrolabe came into Hobart to repair, refresh, and seek out information relative to the wreck and remains of La Pérouse's shipwreck.
Astrolabe then visited Fiji, after which Jules Dumont d'Urville executed the first relief maps of the Loyalty Islands (part of French New Caledonia) and explored the coasts of New Guinea. He confirmed the site of La Pérouse's shipwreck in Vanikoro (one of the Santa Cruz Islands, part of the archipelago of the Solomon Islands) and collected numerous remains of his boats. The voyage continued with the mapping of part of the Caroline Islands and the Moluccas. The Astrolabe returned to Marseille on 25 March 1829.
