CASSINGA bulk carrier

Built as a bulk carrier under yard no B447-2/2 by A. Warskiego Stocznia Szczecinska, Szczecin, Poland for Companhia Nacional de Navegacao at Lisbon.
November 1969 laid down,
18 July 1970 launched as CASSINGA, named after the town Cassinga in Angola.
Tonnage 19,681 grt, 32,209 dwt, dim. 202.3 x 24.5m., length bpp 185.0m,
Powered by a diesel engine ?hp . Speed 15 knots.
04 January 1971 completed.
Imo No 7025384.

1986 Sold to Portline – Transportes Maritimos Internacionais, Lisbon and renamed in JOAO DE BARRAS.
1992 Sold to Dalian Chemical Corporation, La Valleta, Malta, renamed in ADEN,
14 May 1994 arrived Fuzhou, China for breaking up.

Bulk Carrier CASSINGA 1971-1992 Companhia Nacional de Navegação, Lisbon The Cassinga was the first large Portuguese cargo ship to specialise in the transport of bulk ores. Purchased in 1971 following its construction in Poland, it was used to transport iron ore from Angola (Cassinga/Moçâmedes) to Lisbon. It was also used to transport grain imported from the American continent, serving the Companhia Nacional de Navegação shipping company until 1985 and then joining its successor, Portline, until 1992, under the name João de Barros. Sold abroad, it was scrapped in China in 1994.
