Count Login (Loggin) Petrovich Heiden (Dutch: Lodewijk Sigismund Vincent Gustaaf Reichsgraf van Heiden; September 6, 1773 – October 17, 1850) was a Russian admiral (1833) of Dutch origin who commanded Russian ships in the famous Battle of Navarino. Grandfather of public figure P. A. Heiden.
From an old Westphalian count family. Full name: Count Ludwig-Sigismund Gustav von Heyden (Graaf Sigismund Lodewijk Gustaaf van Heiden-Reinestein). He began his military service in the Dutch navy, reaching the rank of lieutenant. In 1795, he swore allegiance to Russia and began serving in the Black Sea Fleet with the rank of lieutenant commander. In 1799, with the squadron of S. A. Pustoshkina, he arrived on the island of Corfu to F. F. Ushakov , delivering troops for the garrison, in 1800 he landed troops in the Kingdom of Naples in the city of Otranto , and then returned to Ochakov , where he was appointed commander of the frigate " John Chrysostom ."
In 1803 he transferred to the Baltic Fleet and was appointed to the Naval Cadet Corps , and then served in the Admiralty. In 1808, he was appointed commander of a detachment of rowing ships in the Gulf of Finland, and repeatedly participated in battles with Swedish rowing ships. On May 26, 1808, he was promoted to captain of the 1st rank for distinction.
In 1812, he commanded a flotilla of rowing ships and transported troops from Finland to Revel and Narva . In 1813, he moved with a rowing flotilla (63 gunboats and 13 other ships) from Revel to Danzig, participated in its blockade, including bombardment from the sea of French batteries and fortifications. Twice (April 28 and August 12) his ships survived battles with French and Danish ships, thwarting their attempts to break into the fortress. For distinction in these matters, he was awarded a gold sword with the inscription “for bravery” and on September 4, 1813, the rank of captain-commander . In 1814, he was with a detachment of rowing ships in the united Anglo-Swedish squadron during the clearing of French ships and garrisons of North German ports.
On May 20, 1816, he was appointed military governor and chief commander of the port of Sveaborg . On August 27, 1817, he was promoted to rear admiral . On June 6, 1821 he was awarded the Order of St. George, 4th class for length of service, impeccable from entry into the rank of chief officer for 25 years.
In 1823, following an anonymous denunciation, he was removed from office and put on trial; in 1826, he was completely acquitted and assigned to serve at the Admiralty in St. Petersburg.
Third Archipelago Expedition. In June 1827, he was appointed to command a squadron of 9 ships, joined the Anglo-French squadron and headed to the Mediterranean Sea to the shores of Greece, where on October 8 he was in the battle of Navarino . On November 9, 1827, he was promoted to vice admiral and awarded the Order of St. George, 3rd class in reward for excellent bravery shown in the naval battle of October 8, 1827 at Navarino. Then he headed the Russian combined squadron (in June 1828, the second squadron of Rear Admiral P.I. Ricord arrived ), which, during the outbreak of the Russian-Turkish War, successfully carried out the blockade of the Dardanelles the fight against Turkish shipping in the Аrchipelago . After the Archipelago expedition.In 1830 he was appointed head of the first division of the Baltic Fleet (based in Kronstadt ) . On December 6, 1833 he was promoted to admiral . He became the military governor of Revel in 1834, and from 1838 he also became the main commander of the port of Revel .
