To commemorate the 150th anniversary of the Hydrographic and Oceanographic Service of the Chilean Navy (SHOA), Correos Chile has prepared a postal issue of two stamps and a vignette that aims to highlight the important legacy of this vital organization for the development of the country.
It features a hydrographic boat carrying out multi beam surveys in Antarctic territory and a SHOA chart, respectively.
In 1874, a momentous event took place in the study of the more than 6,400 kilometres of coastline, in addition to the numerous rivers and lakes that adorn the extensive geography of Chile: the creation of the Hydrographic and Oceanographic Service of the Chilean Navy (SHOA), an organization responsible for providing information, assistance and technical elements to ensure the safety of navigation on river
The primary mission of the Hydrographic and Oceanographic Service of the Chilean Navy is to provide technical elements, information and technical assistance to offer navigational safety in fluvial and lacustrine areas, internal waters, territorial waters, and in the high seas adjacent to the Chilean littoral. Among its many activities, SHOA coordinates through the National Oceanographic Committee (CONA), the development of the “CIMAR Fiordos” Marine Scientific Research Cruises. These cruises are multidisciplinary in nature, carrying out projects in different areas of oceanography such as physics, chemistry, biology and geology. In order to exchange the results of these investigations, both with the national and international scientific community, SHOA began the standardization of biodiversity data from the CIMAR Cruises, taking them to the recommended Darwin Core format, in order to be uploaded to the GBIF platform.

About the Hydrographic and Oceanographic Service of the Chilean Navy
SHOA or Servicio Hidrográfico y Oceanográfico de la Armada de Chile (Spanish for Hydrographic and Oceanographic Service of the Chilean Navy) is an agency of the Chilean Navy that manages situations dealing with hydrography and oceanography, including tides and tsunamis. It is also the responsibility of SHOA to contribute through research to the development and promotion of other related national and international activities of interest to the country.
The primary mission of the Hydrographic and Oceanographic Service of the Chilean Navy is to provide technical elements, information and technical assistance for navigational safety in fluvial and lacustrine areas, internal waters, territorial waters, and in the high seas adjacent to the Chilean littoral.
Likewise, it represents the official, technical and permanent service of the state with regard to all that has to do with hydrography: maritime, fluvial and lacustrine hydrographic survey, nautical cartography, the production and publication of navigational charts of national waters, oceanography, the planning and coordination of all national oceanographic activities related to physical-chemical research, tides, currents and tidal waves, nautical geography, navigation, astronomy, the official time signal and aero-photogrammetry applied to nautical charts.

LSR ORCA: the first boat to conduct hydrographic studies in Chilean Antarctic Territory
Monday, March 13, 2023
The unit will carry out hydrographic survey work in Chile Bay to update the nautical chart of the sector.
Within the framework of the 2023 Antarctic Campaign currently being carried out by the AP “AQUILES”, the Hydrographic Service of the Chilean Navy (SHOA) sent the LSR boat “ORCA” to the Chilean Antarctic Territory, characterized by its underwater sounding capabilities.
During this commission, the Head of the Hydrographic Group, 1st Lieutenant Harald Urbina, explained that the tasks considered are related to the hydrographic survey in Chile Bay to update the nautical chart of the sector.
The ORCA boat is compact and enclosed, so the current crew of five people can operate from inside, without being exposed to the cold and with greater autonomy. It has a length of 10.43 meters with the structure deployed and can reach a maximum speed of 45 km/hour.
This is the first time that this type of boat has travelled to the White Continent and allows work to be carried out in areas where access is difficult and risky for larger vessels.
The Chilean Navy fulfils the assigned institutional mission areas, thus contributing to the actions of effective sovereignty in the Chilean Antarctic Territory, to National Development and State Action.

Characteristics
The ORCA (LH-02) Hydrographic Boat, Defender type, is built with an aluminium hull; It is 8.2 meters long; 2.6 meters maximum beam, draught 1.0m; It displaces 3,713 tons and has Mercury outboard 225hp engines that allow it a maximum speed of 46 knots. She is self righting. It can be transported by land or air, if it is not possible to navigate to the workplace. Its hydrographic equipment consists of a multi beam sonar, a motion sensor, an SVP profiling probe and additionally, it has the capacity to work with a lateral search sonar (SRL); all of them instruments that will allow obtaining detailed information on the seabed, in the sectors close to the coast, which will contribute to further complement the existing information in the National Nautical Cartography, prepared by the SHOA.
The ORCA (LH-02) was built by Safe Boats International, Seattle, USA.
The other stamp show the SHOA chart 14231 of Chili Bay.
