Built as a wooden hulled galleass by the Abanus shipyard in Mariehamn, Aland Island for the Albanus Association.
24 July 1988 launched as ALBANUS.
Tonnage 80 ton displacement. Dim.30.00 x 6.20 x 1.90m (draught), length of hull 21.70m.
Sail area 303 square meters, 8 sail.
Auxiliary engine, Volvo Penta TAMD 71, 210 hp.
Crew 2 – 4, and 20 trainees.
Homeport Mariehamn, Aland Islands, Finland.
Replica of a ship built by J.A. Henriksson in Äppelö, Hammarland, on the Aland island in 1904, when these ships were used for transport of
timber, fish and other foodstuffs
Built at a temporary shipyard in Mariehamn 1886-89,
1986 the timber for ALBANUS was procured, 1987 keel was laid, ceremoniously launched in July 1988 during the Cutty Sark Tall Ships Race
in Mariehamn, rigged in spring of 1989, sailed the first time in May 1989
Since then the vessel has been a symbol for seafaring in this region.
She has proved to be a fast sailing ship on many occasions.
The ALBANUS is now used mainly for training schoolchildren and young people in the art of traditional sailing.
