During the austral summer, L’ASTROLABE provides maritime services to Adélie Land for the benefit of the French Polar Institute and the higher administration of the TAAF.
In accordance with the requirements of the Polar Code in force since January 1, 2018, ice pilots embark on board and contribute through their expertise in navigation in high latitudes, their advice, their presence and their actions to the success of this mission, which is vital for science and the lasting presence of France in these latitudes. This shared expertise contributes to the nautical safety of the mission.
The function is carried out by officers of the French Navy who, through their professional experience, their specific training and their long periods of navigation in the polar zone, have acquired very high-level expertise.
