With the end of the British mandate, the Israel Police was established as the official enforcement body of the country. From its first day, its duties were defined by The Police Act. These included responsibility for maintaining the safety of people and property, preventing crime, as well as detecting criminals, apprehending them, and bringing them to justice.
The Israel Police Force, which at the end of the first year of its existence was less than two thousand policemen, today has over 30,000 men and women. The Israel Police is a national police force, whose jurisdiction covers the entire territory of the State of Israel.
From its onset the Israel Police also dealt with internal security and fighting terrorism, and from 1953 the Police has a gendarmerie unit whose main role is security (Israel Border Police). However, it was only in 1974 that the police officially received responsibility for internal security.
Policemen are granted various authorities for the purpose of fulfilling their duties such as: investigating crimes and apprehending criminals; prosecution and charging defendants; supervision and regulation of road traffic; business licensing and management; licensing of marches and public gatherings; assistance in enforcing judgments and orders issued by those authorized to do so by law.
The Police is entrusted with the performance of duties and tasks in the following areas:
• Fighting crime: investigating crimes, discovering criminals and bringing them to justice, exposing unreported crimes and preventing crimes.
• Maintaining public order: handling citizen inquiries regarding violations of law and order, handling illegal demonstrations and gatherings, handling business licensing issues, responsibility for public security.
• Supervision and regulation of road traffic: traffic flow and direction, enforcement of traffic laws, investigation of traffic accidents and bringing traffic offenders to justice.
• Internal security: maintaining public peace and combating hostile sabotage activity - dealing with and preventing sabotage attacks.
The Israel Police works to enforce the law, to prevent crimes, to strengthen the civil norm of obeying the law, to maintain the safety of people and property, and to maintain public order, while maintaining human dignity and rights. Service in the Israel Police is based on the recognition of the national mission and the fulfilment of identification with the values of the Israel Police and the spirit of the declaration of Independence.

The Israel Marine Police (IMP) visited SAFE Boats International (SBI) this week to inspect and sea trial the final three vessels of 10 new patrol boats under contract. The delivery finalizes an extensive multiyear vessel procurement planned by the Israel Marine Police since 2012.
“Over the past three years the Israel Marine Police partnered with SAFE Boats International to construct 10 vessels for the safety and security of our community. Each vessel has enhanced command and control systems that will increase the Israel Marine Police interoperability within our region,” said Yuval Karta, Commander, Israel Marine Police. “Our new vessels will serve our community by keeping the public safe through Law Enforcement and Search and Rescue.”
The first Israel Marine Police boats delivered by SBI are currently in service patrolling the coastal waters of Israel in the Mediterranean Sea. Formally delivered at a special ceremony at SBI on December 20, the last of the vessels are to be placed in service by March of 2017.
