KAIWO MARU ( English : KAIWO MARU ) is a training ship operated by the Japan Maritime Technical Education Agency . Along with NIPPON MARU, it is one of Japan's leading large sailing ships . This article focuses on the second-generation KAIWO MARU ( KAIWO MARU II ) , which was completed in 1989 . Although its appearance is similar to NIPPON MARU, there are many differences between the two, such as the generators, main engine, lifeboats, propellers, and type.
The KAIWO MARU II was launched in 1989 as a full-length superstructure-deck ship as the successor to the original KAIWO MARU .
It was larger than its predecessor, the KAIWO MARU, and further advanced the construction technology developed for the NIPPON MARU II, adopting a controllable pitch propeller with feathering function that reduces resistance by making the propeller's angle of attack parallel to the water flow, giving it sailing performance superior to that of the NIPPON MARU II. It won the Boston Teapot Trophy, awarded to the fastest sailing ship of the year, four times in 1990 , 1991 , 1994, and 1995 (the NIPPON MARU II won it three times). In 1995, it set a record of sailing 1,394 miles in 124 hours .
KAIWO MARU II was not state-owned, but was built with private donations.
It is owned by the Maritime Education Foundation, a public interest incorporated foundation, and is operated under a charter contract with the Independent Administrative Institution , the Maritime Education Agency . The Maritime Education Foundation runs experience voyages and long distance voyage courses for the general public, but because it is a training ship for a maritime education institution , the number of general recruitment slots may be reduced depending on the number of trainees participating.
As a supplementary note, the external differences between the NIPPON MARU II are the figurehead , the number of hull lines, the shape of the lifeboats, and the shape of the rear hood (roof of the steering wheel).
At 10:47 p.m. on October 20, 2004 , the KAIWO MARU II was anchored off the coast of Fushiki-Toyama Port to avoid Typhoon 23 , but was forced to drag anchor by strong winds and ran aground on a breakwater in the Toyama area of Fushiki-Toyama Port .
Rescue efforts began at 8:45 AM on October 21. By 3:20 PM, all 167 people on board had been rescued, including 30 injured .
Local ships did not take such evacuation measures, and the Japan Coast Guard had also advised that the Fushiki area was not suitable for avoiding the typhoon ; the captain of the ship at the time later admitted to an error of judgment.
On November 24 , the KAIWO MARU II, which had been stranded for 35 days, was lifted by two cranes and removed from the reef, and towed to the nearby Shin Nihonkai Heavy Industries shipyard for temporary repairs. The repairs took a long time as there were 130 damages to the bottom of the ship alone, but the temporary repairs were completed on April 5, 2005 , and the ship was towed to the IHI Yokohama Works for full repairs . Approximately 40% of the steel materials were replaced, mainly on the port side, and the repairs were completed on January 5 , 2006 .
The KAIWO MARU I, a retired training ship, is moored at Kaiwomaru Park in the Shinminato district between the two districts , and it was planned that the two ships would be together for the first time when the KAIWO MARU II would call at the port, but this did not take place until July 15 , 2006, approximately one year and nine months after the grounding accident .
The KAIWO MARU II is a four-masted barque -type ship with a mainmast height of 43.5 m (height from the superstructure deck) and a total of 36 sails (total area of 2,760 square meters).
