KANONNEERBOOT Gunboat

Post by aukepalmhof » Tue Apr 22, 2025 4:28 am

Kanonneerboot (Gunboat), small type of warship, of which the fore and/or aft ship was usually armed with sometimes very heavy cannons in addition to the lighter guns on board. Such shallow-drafted ships were used for tasks that were less suitable for larger ships due to their size, draught, better manoeuvrability, etc., such as guarding and reconnoitring rivers, coastal armament, etc.
Cutters, schooners and brigs or similar smaller warships were also used for this.

In the Netherlands, the gunboats from the beginning of the 19th century are well known as a result of the role they played in shelling of Antwerp during the Belgian Revolution (1830).
Gunboat No. 2 under command of J.C.J. van Speyk then flew into the air.

This type of gunboat was also used by the Royal Belgian Navy after 1830.
