The term "scholschuit" (school barge) is not often used in Dutch, but is likely a corruption of the word "schuit" or the name of a specific type of vessel. "Schuit" is a general term for a simple vessel, often used for transporting goods on inland waterways in the Netherlands, with several variations, such as "trekschuit" (canal barge) or "pakschuit" (packhouse). "Schuit" can also refer to a small cargo vessel.
Sometimes, the "scholschuit" was called a "Schools barge," which, along with the “Pernisser mizzen barge”, was a smaller type of Overmaas fishing barge. They carried a mainsail with a boom and a gaff. . They fished in the inlets with a trawl for flatfish and shellfish. In the past, skippers sometimes referred to a barge with fixed decks, possibly gangways, and a small superstructure as a "schhipschuit." Typically, a small, mostly open cargo vessel was called a "schuiteschip." In Groningen, it was also called a "slootschip."
