India–Maldives relations are the bilateral diplomatic ties between India and the Maldives. Relations between the two nations are cordial, characterized by close strategic, economic, and military ties. India helps maintain peace in the island nation, mindful of its own strategic interests in the Indian Ocean. Diplomatic relations between the countries were established in 1966[1][2][3].
His Excellency President Dr Mohamed Muizzu, reflecting on the 60 years of diplomatic relations between the Maldives and India, has described the diplomatic ties between the two nations as a reflection of shared history and enduring partnership.
The President expressed gratitude to the Government of India for its continued support and steadfast friendship. He stated that the Maldivian Government is committed to building an inclusive and dynamic economy, empowering young people, and ensuring peace and security in the region. President Dr Muizzu acknowledged that India’s partnership is instrumental in realising these ambitions.

The Maldives is located south of India's Lakshadweep Islands and approximately 700 kilometers from Sri Lanka. Since 1966, India and the Maldives have cultivated close strategic, military, economic, and cultural ties. India pro
vides support to its neighbor, while the Maldives views India as a counterweight to the influence of Sri Lanka—which lies in close proximity to the island nation and is its largest trading partner.

Recognising this enduring heritage, the Department of Posts has released a Commemorative Postage Stamp featuring the Maldivian Vadhu Dhoni alongside India’s traditional Uru boat. This stamp pays tribute to the timeless maritime bond between India and the Maldives and celebrates the Vadhu Dhoni as a proud emblem of Maldivian craftsmanship, resilience, and oceanic tradition.
