Deliverance

Post by shipstamps » Fri Jan 30, 2009 7:33 am

A quaint-looking stern-wheeler, the Deliverance, appears on a Belgian Congo stamp issued on May 4, 1898. She was one of the first steamers in service on the upper Congo, navigating the river from 1890 to 1898. Vessels on this stretch of the river, between Leopoldville and Stanleyville, are built to draw not more than 51/4 ft., some only drawing from 4-4'/2 ft. of water. Many of the modem steamers are laid up for several months at a time, only being in service at high - water periods.
