Condor 1

Post by shipstamps » Sat Jan 10, 2009 1:03 pm

The Commodore Shipping Co., Ltd., of Guernsey has issued two sets of stamps showing a map of the islands, with the two top values, both 3s. denominations, depicting the latest craft in service in the Channel Islands. This is the 140-passenger hydrofoil Condor 1, which is Britain's first hydrofoil to be placed in regular service. Built at Messina at a cost of £190,000, the CondorI is 91 ft. long and has a maximum speed of 47 m.p.h. This interesting craft entered service on May 1, 1964 and is operated by Condor, Ltd., a Guernsey-based company, although apparently Jersey is the centre of operations. Daily services are scheduled to Guernsey and St. Malo, the latter journey taking 70 minutes compared to 3 hours by conventional ships.
